What Dominique Perrault, the French architect has to say about the Notre Dame fire.

Dominique Perrault, who is best known for his design of the French National Library, had a lot to share when asked

about the fire in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Referring to it as “the heart of the heart” he said,

“Notre-Dame, the heart of the heart of Paris, treasure of the Île de la Cité, has just suffered the most trying moments in its long history. Across all lands and cultures of the world, this drama leaves us speechless, touching the hearts and arresting the gaze of everyone. It reminds us all how much architecture, as indeed every artefact, is a fragile thing. Notre Dame is…”

Located in Mumbai’s central business district, ‘cardboard bombay’ by NUDES.

It is literally a ‘thinking outside the cardboard box.’

This project by the architect is the 100% recyclable and biodegradable material to form the interior of the cafe in Mumbai.

the material has been selected as it is extremely versatile. Also, it has magnificient sound absorption properties.

The entire landscape of ‘Cardboard Bombay’ includes the dynamic free flowing geometries, bespoke furniture and light fixtures have been sculpted entirely from cardboard.

NUDES approached the material and did constant research which included prototyping and testing the material in real world constraints including humidity, water resistance and temperature fluctuations.

The table tops are impregnated with wax treatment to prevent water absorption and facilitate ease of maintenance.

The cardboard is also comprised of approximately 50% air which makes it lightweight and durable.

In addition, there exists a strong co-relation between the geometry of the ‘micro’ sinuous fluting of cardboard sheets and the ‘macro’ sinuous free flowing forms. Intricate patterns and textures are created by slicing the cardboard fluting at different angles and curvatures governed by geometric discipline.

The space aims to engage a dialogue and conversation on the role of design, material and technology in protecting the earth’s resources towards a sustainable future.

Snug down amid tall trees and flourishing greenery is the Yadu Corporation office, in New Delhi. For their 15,000 square feet space, the company approached Abhinav Chaudhary, Kakoli Bhattacharya, Harish Chauhan, Debopriyo Chatterjee and Shubham Jain of flyYingseeds Design Studio. A tranquil building that merged the indoors with the outdoors was something they desired

“When we observed the site with its old existing trees, we were inspired to design an organic eco-work space where all the existing flora became the pivotal nodes for a series of courtyards and atriums. Through the design, we wanted to set new standards for the company culture and create a sense of openness through organic architectural vocabulary and a stimulating green environment,” says Chaudhary.
